Pump & Plate

Upper Midwest

Gas stations, sorted by the food. Out here the closest lunch is sometimes at the pump.

The list

This is a starter list, in rough order, and it's opinion. Nobody ran a taste test and nobody paid to be on it.

  1. 1

    Kwik Trip

Out of La Crosse, Wisconsin. They bake their own bread and donuts, and the Glazers have a real following. In Iowa, Illinois and the Dakotas the same stores are called Kwik Star.

    Known for: Glazers donuts
  2. 2

    Casey's

A gas station that is also one of the biggest pizza sellers in the country. Fifth-largest pizza chain, by the company's own count. Mostly small towns.

    Known for: breakfast pizza
  3. 3

    Holiday Stationstores

The long-time standby across Minnesota and the Dakotas. Its owner has been switching stores over to the Circle K name since 2022, so the sign on yours may have changed.

  4. 4

    Cenex

A co-op fuel brand. The stations are run locally, so the food depends on the store. Some have a kitchen in back. Some have a roller grill.

    Ask a local which one
  5. 5

    Love's & Pilot

Interstate truck stops. Chain restaurants inside, showers, and most are open all night.

And the gas prices?

  • Prices change through the day, so this page doesn't quote any. Check a live price app before you fill.
  • Border towns: North Dakota's state gas tax is lower than Minnesota's. That doesn't always show up at the pump, so look at both sides in Grand Forks/East Grand Forks or Fargo/Moorhead.
